Mexican artist Frida Kahlo is remembered for her self-portraits, pain and passion, and bold, vibrant colors. She is celebrated in Mexico for her attention to Mexican and indigenous culture and by feminists for her depiction of the female experience and form.
Perfectly sculpted faces that elicit an awkward sense of ennui gilded in capacitated fascination, on top of a dainty figure dressed in exuberant costumes with nuances stretching from head to toe. Few may draw comparisons between these pieces and Russian Matryoshka dolls, also known as tea or stacking dolls, they are wooden ornaments that open up only to reveal an identical stature inside. They symbolise fertility and fecundity, the smallest doll representing a family's seed or sprout.Every doll may pose different connotations or associations, from the great Mexican artist of late Frida Kahlo to Hibari Misora of Japan, the dolls plastered onto this wall here may represent something different to each individual passerby. All the while, the artistic mastermind behind these pieces having been inspired by something much more simple: his daughter. These pieces are a metaphor for not only fecundity but growth, each piece having been beleagured with ideas from different artists or heroes of the past, Bebe (the artist) hopes to instill these characterstics unto his child for the sake of a fruitful future to come treading contemporary issues in contemporary footwear. Be it Sora, Bebe's daughter, or whomever the mind pleases, these pieces serve as a portal allowing us to live vicariously through our little matryoshka doll.
Tentang Seniman :
Wahyu Kusmawan a.k.a Bebe Wahyu (b.1989) adalah seniman Indonesia yang lahir dan bertumbuh di Kota Bogor. Seni sudah menjadi ketertarikannya sejak remaja. Bebe yang lulusan Akademi Desain Grafis ini menggunakan pengalaman visualnya dalam kehidupan sehari-hari sebagai inspirasinya dalam berkarya. Menurutnya, tidak ada filosofi yang spesifik dalam karya-karyanya, semua mengalir begitu saja dalam proses kreatifnya.
Bebe memulai karirnya sebagai full-time artist sejak 2012, ia dikenal sebagai muralis dan illustrator dengan gaya realis-surealis. Membuat mural di tembok-tembok jalan memberikannya pengalaman yang berharga sebagai street artist dan dari situlah ia mulai mendapatkan apresiasi untuk membuat mural di beberapa ruang publik. Apa pun bentuk penghargaan terhadap karyanya, ia selalu merespons ajakan tersebut dengan sepenuh hati karena melukis adalah passion-nya.
Karakter perempuan seringkali ia jadikan objek dalam karya-karyanya. Menurutnya, perempuan memiliki keunikannya tersendiri untuk dilukiskan. Penggunaan teknik gradasi dan warna-warna yang dreamy kian menghidupkan karyanya yang realis dan surealis.
Bebe juga sering berkolaborasi dengan berbagai seniman. Pengalamannya berkarya di Indonesia dan di luar negeri menjadikannya sebagai salah satu seniman tanah air yang produktif saat ini. Selain berkarya mencipta, ia juga senang berbagi pengalaman dan teknik melukis dalam berbagai workshop untuk memotivasi dan menumbuhkan bakat-bakat baru.
